As the 21st century unfolds, we begin to think about environmental
issues from a global rather than localized perspective. Most
of solid wastes in the world are disposed of at open dumping
sites and more likely burned openly. These practices create
environmental pollution and cause public health hazard. Each
country has accumulated its own valuable experiences to improve
waste management. In Japan, PCB, medical waste, and fly ash
are hazardous waste that needs to be controlled carefully. A
lot of research and development are conducted in the last several
years for its better management. It is worthwhile to share experiences
and to exchange information among us about waste management
policies, practices, research and development.
