MASARU TANAKA
National Institute
of Public Health
Dr. Masaru Tanaka
is currently the Director of the Department of Waste Management Engineering,
National Institute of Public Health, under the Ministry of Health and
Welfare in Tokyo, and President of the Japan Society of Waste Management
Experts. He is also a Professor in Environmental Sciences and Technology
at the Okayama University. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors
for the Pacific Basin Consortium during 1993 - 1994. He earned his B.S.
in Sanitary Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, and his Ph.D.
in Environmental Engineering from Northwestern University, U.S.A.
Relevant experience
includes the following:
- Course leader
for Solid Waste Management course for developing countries sponsored
by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA);
- Participant in
technical cooperation programs for Morocco, Egypt, Thailand and Korea;
- Contact for the
Japan--U.S. Solid Waste Management Conference since 1976;
- Delegate for
OECD Waste Management Policy Group
More recent experience
includes:
- Participant in
comparative study on waste management policies among Japan and European
countries;
- Organized and
managed the 14th Japan Waste Management Research Symposium, Kyoto
City;
- Member of JICA
study team to present the draft final report on the Waste Management
Plan in Surabaya City, Indonesia;
- Participant in
the Japan International Corporation of Welfare Services (JICWELS)
study team to conduct a seminar on hazardous waste management for
the Environmental Impact Management Agency (BAPEDAL), Indonesia;
- Participated
with the Waste Management Research Foundation to investigate the management
of household liquid waste in European countries;
- Member of the
JICA Mutual Consultation Team for the Water Supply and Environmental
Sanitation Training Center Project in Indonesia.
- Commentator on
Plastics Recycling in NHK BS1
