Environmental and Health Studies
Linking
Air Pollution to Health
August
16, 2001 8:30 -12:00 AM
Seminar Room 327, National Engineering Center
University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City
Lecturer: RAUL LEJANO, Ph.D., D.Env.,MS
There is
some data (and much anecdotal information) regarding the connection
between the high ambient pollutant levels and its health outcomes.
This workshop explores fundamental analyses designed to draw
out these connections.
The workshop
will consist of presentations on theoretical and practical aspects.
Workshop material will be handed out. There are two parts to
the workshop:
Health
Risk Assessment
A discussion
of procedures for predicting health effects from exposures and
the science behind these methods (dose-response functions, exposure
estimation, uncertainty)
Environmental
Epidemiology
A discussion of approaches to statistical analyses of cross-sectional
epidemiological data, use of regression techniques and statistical
tools.
Prof. Raul Lejano is
an environmental planner with special interest in the fields
of public health and land-use policy using methods in health
risk assessment to identify vulnerable areas in the inner city.
Another research focus is that of equity planning for which
he has developed unique methodologies for equity analysis. He
has applied these methods to environmental justice issues regarding
spatial distributions of risk and the siting of noxious facilities.
Aside from his collaboration with environmental groups, he also
maintains an active professional interest in environmental quality
control.
