  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

INTRODUCTION:

Industry’s compliance with the toxic and hazardous waste standards in the Philippines continues to be deficient and the government has yet to succeed in the promotion of proper treatment and disposal of toxic and hazardous waste.   To date, the DENR-EMB is intensifying the registration of facilities which are potential generators of hazardous waste.

Based on the consolidated data/information received by DENR-EMB, hazardous wastes generated by the semiconductor and electronics industry sector include waste oil, spent solvents, acid and alkali wastes and solder dross which are either stored onsite, hauled by an accredited waste processor or dumped indiscriminately offsite.

While the government and industry are hampered with lack of resources, the population continues to be exposed to health and environmental risks brought about by exposure to untreated and improperly managed toxic and hazardous wastes.

Objectives:

The seminar will provide participants with theoretical and practical working knowledge in managing hazardous wastes generated by the semiconductor and electronics industry.  The general aim is to provide industry with methodologies towards compliance with the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act No. 6969 (Toxic, Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Act of 1990).

The training program is envisioned to solicit commitments from the national government and industry and to foster development of a cooperative, voluntary network of agencies and organizations on toxic and hazardous waste management in the semiconductor and electronics industry.
